Finding Balance as a Yoga Mom

One of the biggest questions I get asked is “How do you find the time for yourself?” “How do you have time to work out everyday or go for a walk?” How are you Finding Balance as a Yoga Mom.

Why is it always one or the other?

I am a mother of three beautiful children (ages 10, 4, and 2) life is busy and these little loves keep me incredibility busy. So how do I have the time? The answer is really simple, I make time.

Finding balance as a yoga mom and making time for you as a busy mama is one of the most important things you can do not only for yourself but for your family. I strongly believe if you don’t take care of yourself, how are you expected to take care of others?

Now the answer may be simple but executing the answer is a little more complicated… When you make time for yourself you usually do it, in these small moments when everyone else in the house is happy, or they are busy and content in their current activity. So now you do you. Here is how I get it done.

But finding the time to do a full 60-minute practice can be challenging at time. Here are a few tips on how I show up for myself and get it done:


Tip #1 Early Mornings

Now this one is a challenge even for me, waking up earlier than the children, even after having a full night of getting up every hour to calm down my youngest- definitely sounds crazy- but if there is a will, there is a way. Setting your alarm even a half hour earlier so you can start the day off with a practice really does the body wonders.




Tip #2 Become a Chameleon!

Now I do have a workout area in my home that is the best option to get in a yoga practice or a quick booty exercise or whatever your goal is for that day. However, getting to that spot when the kids are running around and need attention- sometimes this space is not an option so what do you do?

Making the kids lunch or breakfast – do a kitchen workout, kids are playing in the living room, use that couch to your advantage and get in a quick session there- you can pretty much get the heart rate up, or do some stretches just about anywhere- you just have to do it. I am looking to do a “Busy Mom Household Workout Series” in the future but until then just give it a go and try it out for yourself.

Tip#3 Invest in your Move Minutes

What are move minutes? Everyday I set an alarm on my watch to go off 4 times throughout the day when that alarm goes off no matter where I am- its time to move. I set a timer for 5 minutes and in those 5 minutes I do a quick series of 5 different movements – 1 minute each. At the end of the day, you would have completed a 20-minute workout! You just had to split it up. Its fine- your busy but you accomplished something for yourself.





Tip #4 Mindful Minutes

Now this doesn’t particularly have anything to do with your physical activity more so your mental activity. Being around the children all day long, catering to them, doing household chores or maybe even working a full time job and then back to the kids in the evening where the job never ends until bedtime and even then- your still on night watch duty just encase your needed.


These Mindful minutes will help, re center yourself, calm the nervous system and give you the strength and patience to carry on in the day. Okay so how do I do this? I set another alarm to go off at 2pm, now you can choose anytime that works best for you but for me 2pm is usually when I need it.

Emotions have built up from the day, I have to get my toddlers ready to leave the house to pick the oldest up from school, I need a moment. My alarm goes off and I slip away for 5 minutes- In these 5 minutes I find a nice quiet place, take a comfortable seat, close down the eyes and do some deep breathing. Sounds simple but with mind blowing benefits. I really urge you to give it try.


I hope these tips can help you in your busy mama day to day life- I know they have done wonders for me and my family. Being a busy mama is all about finding the balance and finding what works while still maintaining your calm, happy, healthy self. It is not a job, it’s a lifestyle, and it is beautiful.
